Introducing two new Rheas on Jimmy's Nature Trail! The Rhea is a member of the ratite group of birds, like the Ostrich and the Emu. It is about a fifth of the weight of an ostrich, but it is still a big bird, weighing from 23-27 kg when adult and standing over five feet tall.
Their homeland is the Pampas of Argentina, extending into Patagonia in the south. Thus, they come from temperate zones, and so they can thrive in the open in our climate.
We are currently running a competition over Half Term to find names for our male and female Rheas so come along to Jimmy's Farm, submit your entry and be in with a chance of winning a Nature Trail Pass for a year! News Item Added: 25th May 2010 |
